New paper: Are apartment residents likely to be affected by changes to coastal infrastructure?

Dykes (often used as trails) seem to be the vector for benefits apartment residents receive.

Back when we surveyed residents around the Minas Basin for Sam Howard’s MES thesis, the sampling frame we used limited us to those living in standalone houses. Subsequent discussions led us to use a different approach to try to reach those using in multi-unit dwellings such as apartments. Today, the paper from that follow-up work is available open access in Facets, Apartment residents are important stakeholders in managed dyke realignment around the Bay of Fundy: landscape benefits, preferences, and complementarity. Thanks to Sam, postdocs Brooke McWherter and Lara Cornejo, and MI/MREM Alex Legault, we found an interesting story in this side-of-the-desk work. We couldn’t find any work on ecosystem services involving rural apartment residents, so feel that this fills an important gap, especially as housing challenges mean even rural coasts vulnerable to climate change are densifying. Here is a plain-language summary:

Apartments and dykeland trails near Wolfville

It is not very common for those who live in apartment buildings to be targeted in research or consultation about landscape change. Some of the reasons for that omission are practical, such as building security. But especially since COVID lockdown, where those in houses with yards had such different opportunities than those in apartments, we need to pay special attention to apartment residents when making policy decisions. Decisions about how to adapt to climate change can affect apartment residents, too. We surveyed apartment residents around the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy, in Nova Scotia, Canada, to see how they used some of the coastal landscapes facing change: agricultural dykes and dykelands, and tidal wetlands. Because of higher seas and bigger storms, some of the dykes may need to be rebuilt further inland, meaning less dykeland and more tidal wetland.

We heard from 2% (168) of apartment residents who received the survey. Many of the respondents were keen and frequent users of the coastal landscapes. All three landscapes were most highly valued for opportunities to enjoy nature. Some agricultural dykes form part of popular public trail systems. The dyke trails often run between agricultural land and tidal wetland, so those enjoying the trails see nature attracted to both at the same time. The three landscapes were also reported by apartment residents as providing opportunities to reflect and feel at home. Some other benefits were associated only with one or two landscapes. For instance, the dykes were associated with safety, because of their role holding back seawater. The dykes and dykelands were associated with being active and social, and the dykes and tidal wetlands were most associated with learning or teaching. It is clear, however, that it is the dyke that enables the benefits from all three by providing an access route.

So when it comes to possible adaptation options, it was not surprising to us that the most preferred option, of the three presented, was building new dykes higher back and restoring wetland in front (something called ‘managed dyke realignment’). That option would likely retain the continuity of dyke that allows public access and keep all three landscapes together, the way respondents like them. That option was more popular than raising the height of dykes where they are, since respondents seemed to understand the engineering viability of this option was likely low, and the costs and risks of dyke breach likely high. One wonders if the higher vantage point gives coastal apartment residents a different perspective on the challenges faced by coastal infrastructure.

When comparing the results of this study with other surveys and studies in the region (one of them with house residents), we concluded that apartment residents are very important to involve in coastal decision-making. This is important in rural areas, where apartments may be seen as less common than in cities but are increasing due to the housing crisis. Apartment residents may rely more than those with private yards upon public coastal spaces for their well-being.

End-of-ResNet Events

ResNet is coming to an end in June 2026! We have trained over 35 students and postdoctoral fellows over the ~6 years of the project. Moreover, the Bay of Fundy dykeland case study (‘Landscape 1’) contributed to training folks from other universities such as McGill and Brock who were working in the cross-cutting Theme work packages. Landscape 1, in turn, learned more about ourselves from being studied as part of a larger landscape of natural resource decision contexts in Canada. When we wrote our ‘baseline’ paper about ecosystem services and decision-making in the Bay of Fundy dykeland context the literature was pretty sparse: we have added significantly to that (including with this synthesis) and many things are still in review.

Two events are happening in May and June to celebrate our wrap-up. Landscape 1 is one of the three case studies that ResNet PI Elena Bennett chose to highlight with a short documentary. She travelled here with the filmmaker Mark Wyatt last June to do interviews and shoot footage and her team has been working on it since then. It is now ready to show!

  • First will be on May 20th (7-8 PM) in the Bay of Fundy Ecosystem Partnership meeting (with ACCESS) at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB.   • The second will be on June 1st  (7-8:30 PM) at the Apple Blossom Festival! We have rented out the Al Whittle Theatre on Wolfville’s main drag to show the film as part of the festival. Tickets are free and you can get them here.

New paper: conceptual models as boundary objects

ResNet Landscape 1 postdoc Lara Cornejo led a great new paper, out this week in Nature-based Solutions, called Using a causal conceptual model of managed dyke realignment as a boundary object promotes multi-stakeholder collaboration and co-productionThis paper tells the story of how conceptual models served as critical boundary objects in the Bay of Fundy case study (Landscape 1) of NSERC ResNet, and particularly the final conceptual model (above) based on expert knowledge and empirical project results. The process of building the model is discussed in another recent paper discussed here. This model is different from the baseline model we built at the outset of the project based on pre-/non-ResNet research, that did not include any feedbacks or any decision-making components. This model also has a focus on managed dyke realignment, rather than individual landforms like dykes or tidal wetlands. Thanks to Lara for leading this process!

It was wonderful but also a little bittersweet to join with colleagues from the Bay of Fundy case study landscape (Danika, Brittney, Kiirsti and Alex) and from other landscape and theme teams nationally, for the last NSERC ResNet AGM. We again met at lovely Jouvence, near Orford in QC. Though we are heading into the project’s last year, there were still lots of students present and clearly plenty of scholarly work afoot. We spent a good bit of time looking at what we’ve accomplished as a group, but just as much time looking forward: how can we continue to leverage this work and these networks to make progress in achieving sustainable working landscapes in Canada? Our key messages were workshopped (“stress tested”) and many new research threads were shown as emerging from ResNet. Thanks to PI Elena Bennett for bringing us all together: to do this work in the first instance, and for this last opportunity to gather, celebrate and plot.

Kudos to McGill Bennett-lab NSERC ResNet PhD student Elson Galang whose first two PhD papers came out this past week, both based (at least in part) on the workshops that he led at SMU about the Bay of Fundy NSERC ResNet case study in November 2022. The first one came out in Sustainability Science on January 16th, Co-imagining future scenarios can enhance environmental actors’ empathy toward future generations and non-human life-forms, that found measurable impacts on participants’ empathy towards future people and other life forms, the latter even lasting 3 months after the event. This is tantalizing evidence of the value of participating in the development of environmental scenarios. The second paper came out in Environmental Science & Policy on Jan 21st, Participatory scenario planning: A social learning approach to build systems thinking and trust for sustainable environmental governance. This shares more good news about participation in such processes in relation to the cognitive, relational and normative dimensions of social learning. Both papers also describe innovative methodological tools for assessing these complex ideas. Congratulations, Elson!
