The Ocean Mapping Group at UNB has released the Mactaquac bathymetry (depth of water) in a wonderful Google Map interface. A Nackawic resident sent it to me this morning with a story of how moving it was to see the former features revealed. I have been waiting a long time to see this, too, and it impresses with crisp 1.66 metre resolution detail. Little sedimentation is evident up against the dam wall, and islands, towns and former river channels remain intact. It will be interesting to navigate it in parallel with our , to decode some of the more curious shapes. The ‘illumination’ applied to provide a 3D effect has the visual effect of making it look inverted, (i.e. causeway lower than water channels). But this is a marvellous dataset which will enable important visualization work in the consideration of options for the Mactaquac dam.

Got diversity?

Diversity among our jurors in their view of an ideal energy mix for NB in 2040.

Our energy jurors completed a pre-test last night to indicate what they preferred in the future energy mix of the province of New Brunswick. With the above diversity in the group, it will be fascinating to see how the consensus process proceeds tomorrow.

Citizen Jury underway

We are underway at UNB’s Wu Centre, at the New Brunswick Electricity Energy Jury, with Mike Bourque from the provincial utility talking about energy mixes that keep the province ticking over. RASD (reduce and shift demand) is a big part of meeting the gap that will form as some older infrastructure goes offline in coming years. A great discussion underway already.

Mactaquaction

NB Power CEO Gaetan Thomas gestures towards the visualizations for the three Mactaquac options, including the ‘removal’ option, which seems to remove not only the dam and its headpond, but all other infrastructure and trees as well.

Monday NB Power announced its public engagement process related to the Mactaquac Dam decision (rebuild, decommission, or remove). Five public meetings are planned in the region for a nine-day period in October, all mid-week or I’d be heading up, and they also have an online survey for people to share their opinions and values. They have also released a few draft reports for comment, including the frugally scoped and costed Social Impact Comparative Review undertaken by Dillon who is also doing the First Nations engagement (no reports yet available on that). This is all a very tightly constrained process and I will watch with interest how it proceeds and how (if) the resulting data is synthesized and used.
