Me on the Northumberland Shore

DalNews published a nice profile of me last week, written by Andrew Riley, associated with my involvement in the big Transforming Climate Action CFREF project being led by Dalhousie, with collaboration from UQAR, Laval and Memorial. Though I’m not always comfortable with ‘big science’ of this kind, I’ve been enjoying being part of Cluster 3 of that large grant–the part focused upon Adapting Equitably–thanks to existing collaborators like Ian Stewart, Patricia Manuel, and Fanny Noisette and the many new collaborators I’m meeting along the way. We are currently in the thick of writing the official proposal before the end of March.

New SSHRC KS grant

Great news this morning from my co-supervised postdoc at SMU, HM Tuihedur Rahman, who was successful in the most recent round of SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis grants. Called ‘Using carrying capacity measures to guide the transformation of coastal governance systems for sustainability’, we have a dream team of collaborators, including Melanie Zurba and Peter Duinker here in SRES, and Tony Charles and Danika van Proosdij at SMU. Looking forward to this new initiative. Congratulations, Tuihedur! We’ll be looking for some good RAs soon to help dig into the literature on this topic.

Later update: This good news was followed by awful news in the afternoon that my SSHRC Insight Grant was not successful. Back on the horse this fall!

Announcing NSERC ResNet

Coast-to-coast cream of the crop: Phil Loring, Brian Robinson, Anne Salomon, Evan Fraser and Elena Bennett all cramming slides for the NSERC SPG-N site visit at McGill back in Spring 2019.

The media blackout has finally been lifted, thanks to a whimper of a press release from NSERC, that our Strategic Partnership Grant for Networks led by Elena Benett at McGill was successful! This is the culmination of a few years of partnership formation, collaboration and grant-writing. NSERC ResNet, the short name for our “network for monitoring, modeling, and managing Canada’s ecosystem services for sustainability and resilience”, will advance Ecosystem Services (ES) as a framework for thinking and working across disciplines to make better decisions in this country. The project will apply ES to contentious production landscape issues across Canada, including the Atlantic case study I’m co-leading with Jeremy Lundholm and Danika van Proosdij on the Bay of Fundy dykelands. We’ve got great partners, and a very active case as the NS Department of Agriculture is already deciding which dykelands can and should be sustained, and which realigned and/or restored to salt marsh. This project will allow us to wrap a research programme around that ongoing work, and leverage experts across the country. I look forward to the next 5+ years with this exceptional team.

Lab scholarship news

Great news in this scholarship season for my group: Incoming MES applicant Farzana Karim and Ruoqian Wang both won Masters Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarships (NSGS; $10K p.a. renewable x 2), also held by second-year MES Yan Chen. Incoming Interdisciplinary PhD applicant Kate Thompson won a PhD-level NSGS ($15K p.a. renewable x 4). Beyond that, first-year MES Taylor Cudney has won a federal SSHRC graduate scholarship to support her second year ($17.5K). This is all great news for these well-deserving recipients, and for lab finances. Research in coastal climate adaptation, agricultural land fragmentation, urban ecosystem services, and energy landscape research are all getting a welcome boost. Brava to all.
