New paper: Mi’kmaw lessons for realigning land relations

As an early Christmas gift, the paper from Emily Wells’ MES thesis, in collaboration with the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM), has just come out in Ecology and Society. The open access paper, Mi’kmaw lessons for realigning land relations in Bay of Fundy dykelands and tidal wetlands, is co-authored with Kara Pictou, who was our key collaborator at the CMM), and Melanie Zurba, Emily’s committee member here in SRES. It draws on Mi’kmaw Traditional Knowledge and interviews with key informants to explore the significance of tidal wetlands, dykes and dykelands to Mi’kmaq and how they approach coastal adaptation decisions as a result. I’ll quote from the paper to explain the outcomes, also shown in the paper’s Figure 2 reproduced below: “Overall, these considerations informed a general preference for wetland restoration. Indeed, a few participants considered restoration an opportunity for reconciliation. Mi’kmaw TK holder Ducie Howe explains:”

I know that probably [settlers] are not going to give [the land] back. But they can, as a way of reconciling, reconcile with the land. And do right by the land…that means our medicines that grow in that marsh, and our food, our relatives that need that land to be restored and viable for them to continue… That would be a form of reconciliation.

It has been an unusually hot week in Nova Scotia. Kudos to filmmaker Mark Wyatt, ResNet central team folks Elena Bennett (PI) and Morgan Jackson, and Ive Velikova from TransCoastal Adaptations at SMU for braving the conditions as they’ve been filming the Landscape 1 synthesis video around the Bay of Fundy dykeland system. My bits were filmed on Tuesday at the lovely Wolfville Waterfront Park. We had to film down on the foreshore to stay out of the wind. Heat notwithstanding, it was a lovely few hours alongside the marsh. Lots of human users–walkers on the dyke and fishers on the marsh–and birds such as goldfinches and a very patient bald eagle. I look so forward to seeing the finished product!

New paper: Bay of Fundy system dynamics and scenarios

Former L1 ResNet postdoc Lara Cornejo has led a tremendous new paper, out open access this week in Ocean and Coastal Management. The paper, Decision-making and ecosystem service dimensions of managed dyke realignment in the complex coastal landscapes of the Bay of Fundy, updates the simplified one-way flows we conceived for ecosystem service tradeoffs in our baseline 2021 Facets paper. Lara used system dynamics modelling to co-create with a range of experts–from universities, federal and provincial government departments, consulting firms, an ENGO and Indigenous organization (all co-authors)–models showing the decision-making processes leading to managed dyke realignment and the ecosystem service outcomes that result. The models drew on lots of published papers and student theses, and allowed trade-offs and synergies to be synthesized. But she didn’t stop there! She and McGill PhD candidate Elson Galang used the four scenarios that emerged from our environmental futures workshop in late 2022 as thought experiments for the models (see below). It is a great read. Bravo!

Lab collaboration

We had a fun (and rare) lab meeting on Tuesday to workshop a collaborative project inspired by the visit of Chinese PhD student Qiqi Zhao. The SolVES methods she has used so far in her research in Nanjing require some adjustment to explore rural Nova Scotia. This project will bring together the expertise of students I am working with around culturomics and social media methods generally (Mehrnoosh, Yan, Keshava, Keahna), including manual and machine learning approaches, and cultural ecosystem services and relational values (Emily, Mehrnoosh, Qiqi, Yan), including quite a few who have already engaged in the Bay of Fundy target system  (Emily, Mehrnoosh, Yan). An exciting nexus of skills and interests as we set about establishing a better understanding of those tricky non-material services and values on the multifunctional Bay of Fundy coast.

Yan Chen was in Toronto again for Social Media & Society, this time presenting collaborative work that was initiated by French intern Camille Caesemaecker, from Agrocampus Ouest. This has led Yan to thinking about a new kind of landscape change using Instagram, after her hydroelectricity work: understanding perceptions of the Bay of Fundy dykelands versus the wetlands they replaced. Those dykelands are becoming ever more difficult to sustain under sea level and storm conditions associated with climate change, and some will have to be realigned and/or restored to salt marsh. This work based on four months of Instagram support the strong female pro-dykeland factor–concerned about culture and recreation–also found through Q-method a few years ago. Nice when triangulation happens.
